PRICE FACULTY OF ENGINEERING Position #32409/32410
Posting Date: August 29, 2022
The University of Manitoba invites applications for a Canada Research Chair Tier 2, a tenure-track or tenured position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, in the area of Water Resources Engineering (WRE): Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation. This appointment is contingent on a successful CRC Tier 2 application.
The Government of Canada has established the CRC program to enable Canadian universities to foster world class research excellence. The proposed CRC aligns with the University’s strategic research plan that identifies Sustainable Systems for Resilient Communities and Sustainable Water Management Systems as target areas. The CRC Tier 2 in WRE Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation will join the
Department of Civil Engineering in the Price Faculty of Engineering, as they strive to support sustainable
Prairie and Northern communities and hydroelectric energy systems. The Department of Civil
Engineering consists of a diverse group of 21 faculty members, thirteen support staff, and approximately
300 undergraduate and 160 graduate students. The WRE Group constitutes a core portion of the Civil Engineering Department and has established collaborations both within the Department and Faculty and with industry and other Canadian research networks. Its funding comes from NSERC, Manitoba Hydro, the Province of Manitoba, the City of Winnipeg, and other industries. The state-of-the-art Hydraulics Research & Testing Facility is one of the largest labs on campus and includes laboratories to support undergraduate and graduate teaching.
Responsibilities:
The Chair will establish world leading research in water resources engineering focused on the challenge of climate change impacts, adaptations, and water security particularly in the context of climate resilient development of hydroelectric energy systems and infrastructure. The successful candidate will be an expert in developing frameworks for multidimensional water security assessments. These dimensions may include, but are not limited to, water availability, water productivity, water-related disasters, watershed health, and water governance, all in the context of a changing climate. The Chair will possess a demonstrated technical background in surface water or groundwater resources (ideally, a combination of both backgrounds) and will develop research that contributes to national and international policies addressing the balance of water supply (surface and groundwater) and demand (urban, agriculture, industry, and rural). The research program is also expected to shape engineering adaptation strategies and policies that foster prosperity, equality, opportunity, and well-being for all. The vast quantity of fresh water in Manitoba is our single most important natural resource; however, along with this wealth come many challenges. This makes Manitoba a unique and challenging application ground for the host of adaptations needed to achieve a sustainable future for rural, urban, and Northern remote communities, giving the Chair the opportunity to demonstrate the impact that proposed solutions can have for communities across the nation and the world.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain an innovative, impactful, and externally funded research program that involves collaborations within the many well-established water-related research groups at the University of Manitoba and beyond. In addition to CRC funding, the Chair will be expected to secure funding from provincial and national sources. Manitoba has a strong water resources engineering community that will benefit from and participate in this research. Stakeholder engagement with Indigenous communities, industry, government agencies and academia will be necessary. Applicants with existing relationships or the ability to build these relationships are encouraged to apply. Engagement with Indigenous communities can be supported by the newly established UM Vice President – Indigenous Engagement.
The Chair will contribute to the training of highly qualified graduate students in research opportunities that will benefit from Manitoba’s extensive natural water resources. The Chair will be expected to contribute to the teaching of a diverse undergraduate and graduate student population in the
Department of Civil Engineering, as well as undertake service to the Department, Faculty, University and professional engineering community; albeit at a reduced capacity.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must be eligible for registration as a professional engineer with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba, and have a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely-related field. Candidates must demonstrate a strong record of scholarly activities. These activities may include peer-reviewed journal articles, research reports, research collaborations, external research funds, contributions to policy, and other evidence of impactful research contributions. Candidates must also demonstrate a clear vision on how their water resources research can be used to help mitigate and adapt to the many climate change challenges that our society is faced with. Candidates will be expected to recruit and mentor a diverse group of highly qualified personnel, including undergraduate and graduate students and other trainees, so should demonstrate potential or experience in this. They must also have demonstrated teaching potential and/or experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Civil Engineering as well as meaningful contributions to service. They must have knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Applicants must be exceptional emerging scholars with less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher since obtaining their terminal degree at the time of nomination. Tier 2 Chairs are valued at $100,000 per year for 5 years with an option to renew once. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) will have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. Please contact the search committee Chair for more information.
The University acknowledges the potential impact that Career Interruptions and Personal Circumstances can have on an applicant’s record of research achievement. We encourage applicants to explain the impact of any such interruption(s) in their submission. Measures will be taken to ensure that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the evaluation process. The CRC Nomination Selection Committee will receive equity training that includes instruction on how to recognize and combat unconscious, implicit, overt, prejudicial and other kinds of bias.
